Have you tried the Flamingo? My father always stays there. They have a great reasonable buffet also to eat at. Garden with flamingos you can see from buffet and you are free to walk around in that area also. Check it out on the web. Its down the street opposite the side of the Mirage etc. Last time I went to Vegas, I stayed at the Mirage and I went to the buffet and walked around the Flamingo. The Golden Nugget as you know is in the old downtown so I guess you must pick between the new strip or old. Good Luck and have fun!
Harrahs has room rates right now for $40 a night, check their website. I stayed their about a year ago and was surprised how nice the rooms were, plus it’s a prime location on the strip.
Casino Royale rules!! I’ve never stayed there, but every time I’m in Vegas that’s usually where I end up at the end of my night. You can’t beat $3 doubles and $1 beers, cheap table limits and slots that actually pay back!
I’ve stumble out of there at 5 or 6 in the morning many times.
Have fun.
Golden Nugget is a real nice place, if you like Downtown, I’d also consider Main Street Station a great choice. California, Fremont and Four Queens ain’t fancy but clean and very reasonably priced.
If you prefer staying midstrip, Bally’s is nice and most times reasonably priced. Harrah’s, Bill’s Gaming Hall and Imperial Palace should be okay if you’re on a budget.
Another possibilty (specially if you have a car) would be staying off strip: Orleans and Sam’s Town are nice and reasonably priced places.
Try the Excalibur. Save yourself a lot of transportation, too.

You don’t say if it will be a weekend or weekday. Go to this site and in the Vegas hotel search box put your dates of travel. It will search the internet for the best prices on all the other sites for the best prices and deals.
Casino Royale would be a great choice because of it’s location. Puts you dead center on the strip which makes it really easy to get around.
name the price your willing to spend at priceline.com, choose the hotel/motel area. I got the Strat at $26 dollars weds/thurs.
SAHARA is always the cheapest
fortunately for you hotels in LV are cheaper than they have ever been in 10 years
So unfortunately are the tourists
Golden Nugget is Downtown
Stratosphere is way off the north end of Strip
Terribles is way to the east of Strip
Think South Point, Gold Coast, Orleans all just off Strip
OR there are deals these days at Excalibur, Imperial Palace and Tropicana
All the good hotels have great prices now. I suggest you stay on the strip….not in town…Check the Sahara, Circus Circus, Tropicana.
